How to Use Our Surf Balm: A Pre-Surf & Pre-Swim Ritual by Rising Venus Botanics

When to Apply
For best results, apply your Ocean Hair Mask to dry hair before getting it wet. This allows the oils and waxes to create a protective barrier that seals the cuticle and locks in moisture before exposure to salt and sun.
If you’re able to rinse your hair with fresh water before entering the ocean, you’ll add an extra layer of protection by reducing saltwater absorption to any dry areas of your hair. Founder Shawna loves pairing this step with a portable surf shower (not affiliated, just a favorite).
How Much to Use
You don’t need to fully saturate your hair unless you’re doing a deep treatment. For daily surf or swim protection, use on areas needing more protection.
Warm a small amount of balm between your palms
Work it through hair, focusing on areas that tend to be more damaged. This is usually the ends, wherever split ends are or the whisps around the face.
How to Remove
Our balm rinses out easily with normal shampooing. If needed for extra removal, start with a conditioner, massage it through to emulsify and remove the oils. Then shampoo (optional) and condition as normal.
Founder Shawna has curly dry hair, and with normal usage of Surf Balm, will only condition on days she isn't planning to use shampoo. It's up to you!
This method prevents over-stripping and leaves your hair soft, nourished, and never greasy.
“I have thick, curly, dry hair and only used conditioner to rinse it out—it felt amazing, and it’s not even oily.”
— Shawna, Founder of Rising Venus
Bonus Use: Overnight Nourishment
Use as a deep treatment mask before bed or pre-shampoo ritual:
Apply generously to dry hair
Braid or bun loosely
Use a pillow cover you don't mind getting oil on
Rinse in the morning with a gentle shampoo (or sneak a surf in first).
